Gestational Diabetes – A Guide For Pregnant Moms

The treatment plan in gestational diabetes has the principal goal of regulating blood sugar levels through:

the right diet
exercise
medications

The Right Diet

The right diet for you in this case includes fruits and vegetables and whole grains. As much as possible you must refrain from eating foods that are high in fat and low in essential nutrients. It is also recommended to eat at least six meals a day.

Exercise

Regular exercise is to be encouraged as this can prevent weight gain which can trigger or worsen complications. If it's okay with your doctor, engaging in aerobic exercises is a good way of regulating blood sugar levels.

Medications

For some women, eating the right foods and exercising are enough to maintain normal blood sugar levels, but for others, they need insulin injections, along with diet and exercise.

Close monitoring is very important in this case; your diabetologist may even advise you to use a special device to monitor your blood sugar levels throughout the day. Your doctor, too, will monitor the development of your baby. He may request for ultrasounds and run other tests to make sure that the baby is coping well.

Although this type of diabetes usually goes away after the baby is born, mothers are at greater risk of developing type II diabetes later in life. That is why monitoring of blood sugar levels, as well as eating the right foods and engaging in regular
exercise, will prove to be of great value to a woman with gestational diabetes.

Does Anyone Know About A Connection Between Flu And Type 1 Diabetes?

I was reading a book about diabetes. It said some researchers believe Type 1 is caused by a flu virus. They believe in some people the flu virus mutates so rapidly the patient doesn't get flu symptoms and the virus settles in the pancreas. My dad was diagnosed with Type 1 in May of 1961, about six weeks after a flu epidemic. He was the only one in our family who didn't get the flu. Does anyone know what contributing factors could be? His mom was an alcoholic who was frequently beaten by his dad, even when she was pregnant.

I have type one diabetes and have done research to see about it.

In all reality there is still no idea of where diabetes comes from although there are theories.

1) One theory is that your immune systems acts up, going kinda bonkers, and kills off the main area of your pancreas and from then on your pancreas is no longer in working condition. This is a widely known theory. If in fact what you are saying you believe is try then maybe he got the flu virus, and while his body was fighting it off his immune system messed up and viola diabetes.

2) Second theory is that any strand of genetics that is messed up can cause illnesses later. For example, alcohol and abuse can mess some genetics up.

3) Third theory is Diabetes is genetic. Usually this is with Type 2 Diabetes but it can be with type one too. So he could have had an ancestor WAY long ago who had it and it pasted to him.
