Please Advice! Do Docs come to this forum?
How much should be the FBS to start taking medicine. Docs take FBS test twice or three times within 10 days and if it is above 160 on three tests , they tell you to start taking medicine. other doctors insist that you can control it by diet and they don't dadvice you to start taking medicine. Which one is the correct procedure or advice? I met a doctor who daringly told me that he does not prescribe tablet or insulin injection unless the FBS is 250 or above. When should one start taking medicine? Some laymen say if it is 127 or above taking medicine is imperative. Still others say any amount above 110 and even less than 126 is not normal. many say below 126 but above 100 is pre-diabetes and no need of medicine. It is conflicting if one considers these suggestions being said on different fora, including this forum. My FBS within a ten days test 176, 165, 144. Now, for 4 months it is between 90-125. No medicine so far. Am I diabetic? I want to

I'm not a doc. I am a pharmacist. If your FBS is over 126 then you are technically diabetic. A MD might not start you on medication at that time due to your willingness to institute lifestyle changes. Remember, these are guidelines and so some docs might not start meds until 160 blood sugar. If you monitor your diet, exercise, lose weight, and monitor your blood glucose you may be able to delay or reverse those numbers without medication. I know a pharmacist that is doing just that. He takes no meds and is controlled with diet and exercise.
Now, the doc that says that 250 FBS is ok to not start meds and institute lifestyle changes is just plan wrong. Remember, that if your fasting glucose is getting up to 250 then when you are eating it's going much higher. Even if it never got over 250 you are doing damage to you kidneys, eyes, nervous system, vascular system, gi tract, and many other systems. Not to mention, you are spilling glucose into you urine at those levels. That leaves you more susceptible to yeast and bactieral infections manifesting as- UTIs. (the glucose in the urine gives them something to chew on-urine is usually sterile). Also, diabetics immune systems are compromised and they get more infections. That doc is not being daring-he's being just plain stupid.
For you with a FBS of 90-125 with diet and lifestyle changes-go for it. You're doing exactly the right thing. Just keep up what you are doing and make sure you keep on monitoring. More than likely at some point in your life, you will become diabetic. But, that could easily be years, if ever.
